A recent tragedy in the form of a school shooting in Parkland, Florida that left 17 dead has once again sparked the painfully redundant debate regarding the alleged hazards of the current accessibility of firearms. Liberals display the unfortunate victims as martyrs for a totalitarian agenda: the systematic disarmament of the American people. What they fail to acknowledge is the glaringly obvious fallacies that are present within their argument, which will be delineated upon here.
First and foremost, numerous case studies and observations demonstrate that areas with strict firearm regulations suffer disproportionate quantities of violence and homicide by firearm. The most prominent of these is the fact that nearly 3,000 people have been shot in the two last months alone, only since the beginning of 2018, in Chicago, one of the most demonstratively liberal areas of the country that, coincidentally, enacted some of the most treasonous gun laws in the country. The most notable of these was the blatantly unconstitutional ban upon handguns that was only struck down relatively recently, in 2010, after a 28 year restriction.
We can look at similar incidents in predominantly liberal areas like California; they vividly illustrate that no quantity of strict gun regulations will stop criminals from committing acts of terrorism and homicide (but they’ll readily be excused if they’re of illegal status). Examples include the San Bernardino terrorist attack(which occurred at the hands of islamic terrorists), in which 14 people were killed, and 22 were seriously injured, and incidents like the tragic murder of Kate Steinle, who was murdered by an illegal immigrant(who was ironically acquitted of murder, and was only held accountable for the possession of a firearm). Had a properly trained individual carrying a firearm been present in either of these incidents, both tragedies could have been avoided.
The same may be said of the horrendous tragedy in Florida this week. Had the heroic football coach Aaron Feis been armed, he would have been capable of actively stopping the shooter, rather than having to sacrifice himself as a human shield for the protection of his students. The 17 victims would likely have survived, had any supervisor within the school been properly armed (and trained).
Rather than address the factual evidence regarding other variables that contribute to mass shootings, the left prefers to use inanimate objects as the scapegoat for the complexities of the mentally unstable human mind.
First, the notion that a disproportionate amount of firearms are used in homicides is absolutely incorrect, and sensationalized propaganda. There are well over 300,000,000 guns within the U.S, and the Washington Post estimates that there are as many as 357,000,000. The average annual rate of homicide by firearm is approximately 34,000. That’s a percentage of .00009- or, rounded up, .0001, or .01% of all firearms within the United States that are used for fatal crimes.
In addition, the CDC estimates that 60%(or 20,400 of those 34,000 incidents) of gun fatalities are suicides. Only 36%(or 12,240 out of those 34,000 incidents) are actual homicides. This proves that the overwhelming majority of violence is caused by mental instability (as indicative by the high suicide rate), not by the possession of firearms themselves.
The fact that mental instability is a key factor in gun violence is also reinforced by the high percentage of shooters who are also on anti-psychotic medication, including Prozac, Risperdal, Hydroxyzine, and others.
According to the CCHR International, at least 36 specific cases involving homicide by firearm were committed by individuals under the influence of, or withdrawing from, Anti-psychotic medication, resulting, collectively, in 172 wounded and 80 killed.
An additional factor includes negligence on behalf of the FBI in investigating potentially dangerous persons, including notorious shooter Nikolas Cruz, who has law enforcement called to his residence 39 times in the span of 7 years. The FBI also failed to intervene when receiving reports on other suspicious individuals turned homicidal, including Dylann Roof, who murdered 9, Omar Mateen, an islamic terrorist who murdered 49 people in the Pulse Nightclub Shooting, Nidal Hasan, who killed 13 people and injured dozens more, and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, one of the brothers behind the 2013 Boston Bombing. All of these individuals were brought to the attention of the FBI, whose gross negligence resulted in the superfluous loss of life that resulted from these incidents of terrorism.
But, rather than address the nature of these complex problems behind mass shootings, the left looks to blame an inanimate object to provide them with immediate emotional gratification and gain comfort from what they conceive to be a problem within the realm of their control.
Despite liberal backlash to push the totalitarian and unconstitutional agenda to prohibit firearms, and subsequently inhibit the ability of American, law abiding citizens to protect themselves, many are swiftly waking up to the realization that, indeed, the only way to stop evil individuals with guns, is to properly arm law abiding citizens. An Ohio Sheriff who offered free instruction on the proper use of firearms to teachers in his respective area found that every available slot was instantaneously taken within 20 minutes of his announcement. Additionally, State Representative Larry Pittman of Florida has proposed that we enact policies permitting faculty personnel to arm themselves and carry on campuses. Those who logically understand the nature of firearms, and our Constitutional responsibility to bear them in defense of ourselves, our families, and other American citizens, are swiftly following suit.
In order to reduce the total number of mass shootings that occur within the United States, all of the discussed variables must be thoroughly addressed. An immediate precautionary policy should be to properly instruct and arm teachers and faculty staff. Secondary points of emphasis should be to re-evaluate our prescription of anti-psychotic medications and a close observation of those who do take them, as well as reforming the Federal Bureau of Investigation, that has so negligently allowed these tragedies to occur within the first place.
It is our responsibility as American citizens to not relinquish our right to bear arms in defense of ourselves and our fellow American citizens, but to respond to this threat with clear objectivity, and in observance of our Constitutional rights. Ultimately, the only way to properly stop murder at the hands of malicious criminals with firearms, is to likewise instruct, train and arm law-abiding american citizens. No more shall young blood be spilled needlessly upon American soil due to totalitarian liberal policies that deprive Americans of the right to defend themselves, and their life, liberty, and property.
